Marcelo said a tearful goodbye to Real Madrid on Monday — but made clear he has no plans to retire and could play against the Spanish club in the near future.

Marcelo, 34, has spent the last 16 years at Real Madrid and departs the Santiago Bernabeu as the most decorated player in the club’s illustrious history.

After signing for the club from Fluminense in 2007 he has won six La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, five Champions Leagues, three UEFA Super Cups and four FIFA Club World Cups.

In total he has made 546 appearances in all competitions, scoring 38 goals.

“I walk out of here with my head held high. My family is very proud of me,” Marcelo said at a special ceremony on Monday attended by his family, friends, team mates and Carlo Ancelotti.

“I feel very fortunate, everything I have had in my life has been with work, but I have been lucky with the people I have had by my side. Thank you very much to you all.

“This is not a goodbye. I do not feel that I am leaving Real Madrid. The club’s future is secure with promising young talent, and in that I include my son, who is playing well in the academy. I arrived as a child, and I leave as a man.”

The Brazilian added he would not be retiring from football, however.

“I won’t retire, not now,” he added. “I feel I can still play. Facing Real Madrid won't be a problem. I’m a big Madridista but I'm also a big professional.”

Marcelo departs the club after helping Real Madrid to win yet another Champions League title.

As captain he raised the trophy after Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Paris last month, despite not playing in the match.
